What you need to know about the Full Accessibility Audit

How do we do a full accessibility audit?

We want to give you the down and dirty of what it takes to do a full website accessibility audit.

We start with automated testing. Don’t let that word, ‘automated’ fool you. Every automated test is truly a manual process. We use different tools like WAVE, ANDI, and axe Dev Tools to run scans of your website. These give us about 30% of the potential accessibility issues found on your website. We compile that data, along with screenshots whenever possible, of where it is on your website, and how to fix it.

Once that process is done we move into manual testing. This is where we check for keyboard navigation, PROPER alt text, verify screen reader compatibility, confirm proper content structure, and more.

Depending on the amount of content on a page, it isn’t unusual for it to take a full day to do one page 🥵. Yeah, it is a lot of work, but we love it.

We do our best to provide the data in a simple easy to understand format, so you can quickly take action to improve your website.

What do YOU need to do for the audit?

Your first step is super easy, select your package size and include the URL for the website you want the audit done on.

Next, you practice patience🤔. We know that isn’t always so easy. But as we just explained a good accessibility audit doesn’t happen over night. And the good and bad of it is, lots of companies are taking the steps to make their brands more inclusive right now, meaning we are working hard to help everyone.

Once you get your audit, your part begins. We have given you the list of what to fix, where it is on your website, and how to correct it. It’s time to get to work 💻. Don’t worry, if you have any questions along the way, we are only an e-mail away.

Lastly, if there was any backend coding issues that your hosting platform needs to fix, we have given you that information and strongly encourage you to submit it to their tech department. Unfortunately, sometimes the accessibility issues are out of our control, but if we work together and hold others accountable, it will pay off in the long run.

Things to consider after your accessibility audit is done

Website accessibility isn’t a one and done job.

  • If the content on your website is in constant ebb and flow, we do recommend doing an accessibility audit each quarter.

If your website is established and maybe you only add blog posts or products on a semi-regular basis, we’d recommend a bi-annual or annual audit.

If you are doing a full rebrand of your website, that is the perfect time to make sure you do an accessibility checkup before you relaunch.

  • Technology isn’t perfect. Links and buttons are constantly breaking, alt text can suddenly disappear, maybe your platform got an update and certain plug-ins don’t work anymore…..we never know what those little computer minions are up to 😵‍💫. Not to mention, the guidelines and laws around digital accessibility are still very much being established. So planning and budgeting for regular accessibility auditing is a necessary item to include in your business operation.

  • YES!

We could leave it at that, but we want you to understand why.

An Accessibility Statement is a document you link at the bottom of your website alongside your privacy policy and terms and conditions.

This statement shares with your customers the steps you are taking to build an accessible experience for everyone.

Our statement slightly differs from many you will see, as we feel it is important to not only state the actions you have taken to create an accessible website, but we include the items we know are not up to par. People appreciate transparency and we believe in giving it to them.

Are you getting hives thinking about doing your own accessibility remediations?

We get it, it isn’t for everyone. And even if you’d like to do it, can you commit a big chunk of time away from all your other business tasks?

Website accessibility is a vital part of your brand identity, so avoid the hives and headaches and let us handle it for you.
