YOU NEED AN ACCESSIBLE WEBSITE!

What goes into an accessibility audit?

Functional Accessibility Testing

What is it and why does it matter

Functional Accessibility Testing is done using various automated tools. We focus on ensuring your website doesn't just meet standards but provides a positive experience for ALL users.

We dig deep into your website's functionality. We check for everything from navigation and content structure, to button and link authentication, and third-party software integrations. We verify the coding of your website isn’t causing accessibility issues for your users.

Manual Accessibility Testing

Why manual testing is essential

Automated tools only detect about 1/3 of the issues needing to be addressed during an accessibility audit. Manual Accessibility Testing, conducted by experienced testers, ensures a thorough examination, uncovering hidden barriers that automated tools overlook.

We use assistive technologies like JAWS, NVDA, and Voice Over to navigate your website. This hands-on approach ensures that your site is truly accessible to those relying on these and other tools for a seamless browsing experience.

WIDGETS

Why accessibility widgets aren’t the answer

Just a Band-Aid, Not A Cure

Widgets and overlays are like a band-aid on a larger issue. They might cover the problem briefly, but they don't fix the underlying accessibility challenges, leaving your website susceptible to continued issues thus, losing you customers.

It is important to understand that while overlays seem like a straightforward solution, they aren’t, and they actually don’t fix anything. Widgets only add complexity to the user experience, making it harder for assistive technologies to navigate, creating more barriers. Not to mention they slow down your website, can cause privacy and security issues, aren’t compatible with mobile devices, and don’t address PDFs or other documents you offer to your clients.

Listen to the real users

  • “If there is a widget, I am out! It’s already hard enough for me to navigate the web with the assistive tech I use daily. The widgets make it so much worse.”

    Molly Chance

  • “They aren’t fixing the problem, just creating more. I wish people would listen to those of us that it actually impacts. ”

    Christian Jameson

  • “ Everyone is getting ripped off by widgets, the people that actually need the web to be accessible and the companies paying for them thinking they are fixing the problem.”

    Jeff Coggs

  • “Honestly, they are more a pain than a Help!. I wish they would just build it accessible from the start.”

    Jan Phillips

  • “Widgets are not helpful and most of the time do not work at all.”

    Jim Stans

FAQs

  • Unless you have taken steps to verify accessibility on your website, it is likely not compliant. Even the pre-made templates and drag and drop website builders that claim to be accessible have issues. It is best to have an official audit done to find the source and fix it.

  • They are a good start. Automated tools are important to use but they don’t catch everything and can flag false positives when it comes to accessibility audits. They often fall short in verifying form accessibility, confirming proper alt text, rich media as a whole, and even color detection; confusing images and text.

Automated tools should always be used in combination with manual testing to verify the most accurate accessibility of your website.

  • No, that is likely causing more issues than it is fixing. Most people needing some sort of assistive technology have what works for them. Widgets often interfere with how those work and can make it impossible for a person to use your website.

It would be far better to invest in a full website audit that includes manual testing to get a clear picture of what needs to be fixed to make your website accessible and than go about remediating it.

  • WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. They create the global standards for digital accessibility. WCAG has three levels of conformance; Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. These guidelines are what should be used when auditing your website.

  • Just like your website, any documents you provide to your customers (PDFs, checklists, workbooks, etc) need to be accessible. They require proper formatting, headings, alt text, etc in order for people of different abilities to access them.
